Columbia Crest: Crowdsourced Cabernet

Campaign Strategy Technical Production Website Design & Development Video Production

At Hammerquist Studios, we like to help our friends whenever we can. So when our partner agency, Cole and Weber, asked us to help them out on a new campaign for Columbia Crest Wine, we were happy to get our feet dirty.

The campaign was for Crowd Sourced Cab, the idea being that users on the site would get to vote on how the grapes will be grown. First, we knew we needed to figure out how to get images and weather date from the actual vines. So we did what vineyards back in the 18th century did to monitor their vines: we installed wireless cameras and a solar weather station using cell-based internet to capture content. Then, we built a site on Expression Engine and a Javascript toolset to create time-lapse videos on the fly. Next we used the Weather Underground’s API to grab real time weather and forecast data and of course we hooked into YouTube’s API to host all the video. Simple, really. Like stomping grapes.
